FULL SYNOPSIS: Set in 12th century Baghdad under Caliph al-Nasir al-Abbasi. Ibn al-Khayyata, son of a seamstress, rises as leader of al-Futuwwa (youth gangs). The film depicts the persecution of Jews in Iraq from the era of al-Mutawakkil (9th century) through al-Nasir's time (12th century). Ibn al-Khayyata transitions from defending Baghdad's poor to joining Saladin's forces against the Crusaders, fighting Richard the Lionheart. His legendary exploits of redistributing wealth inspired the Robin Hood myth when carried back to England by Crusader soldiers.
